Gaviotas is a community in Colombia, which has done a lot of appropriate technology.

Pros

  1. Mature - Gaviotas was founded in 1971
  2. Prolific - Gaviotas has built a lot of appropriate technology, and worked with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

Cons

  • Poor Documentation - Only a couple projects are listed on their website (https://centrolasgaviotas.org/). Most of the documentation is just a photo. BOMs are missing. Technical details are missing. Build instructions are frequently missing. Maintenance guides are missing.
  • Poor Communication - Unable to contact them in 2025 using official website. I did get a response from the contact on the unofficial website (http://www.friendsofgaviotas.org/), but I got a response from someone (Katherine Holt) who said she hasn't been involved with Gaviotas in over 15 years..
  • Poor Licensing - I could not find any licensing information of their designs. If we could contact them, they might give permission to copyleft.

TODO

  1. Contact Gaviotas. Ask for all of their documentation of their tech, if we can license it under CC BY-SA, and publish it on our website
  2. Contact UNDP. Ask if we can license their TECNOLOGIAS EN LA ERRADICACION DE LA POBREZA (1996) under CC BY-SA. Then we can prioritize, build, and document the tech listed.
