Gaviotas is a community in Colombia, which has done a lot of appropriate technology.
Pros
- Mature - Gaviotas was founded in 1971
- Prolific - Gaviotas has built a lot of appropriate technology, and worked with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
Cons
- Poor Documentation - Only a couple projects are listed on their website (https://centrolasgaviotas.org/). Most of the documentation is just a photo. BOMs are missing. Technical details are missing. Build instructions are frequently missing. Maintenance guides are frequently missing. Notable exception: wind mill, hand pump, see-saw pump, hydraulic ram)
- Poor Communication - Unable to contact them in 2025 using official website. I did get a response from the contact on the unofficial website (http://www.friendsofgaviotas.org/), but I got a response from someone (Katherine Holt) who said she hasn't been involved with Gaviotas in over 15 years..
- Poor Licensing - I could not find any licensing information of their designs. If we could contact them, they might give permission to copyleft.
TODO
- Contact Gaviotas. Ask for all of their documentation of their tech, if we can license it under CC BY-SA, and publish it on our website
- Contact UNDP. Ask if we can license their TECNOLOGIAS EN LA ERRADICACION DE LA POBREZA (1996) under CC BY-SA. Then we can prioritize, build, and document the tech listed.
